What's Kava?

Kava is a traditional beverage with deep cultural and spiritual significance across the Pacific Islands. First discovered in Melanesia over 3,000 years ago, its use later spread to Polynesia and other parts of Oceania. Made by mixing water with the pounded root of the piper methysticum plant, kava is non-alcoholic but known for its stress-relieving and mood-enhancing effects. For many indigenous Pacific communities, kava continues to play a central role in ceremonies, social gatherings, and practices of connection and respect.

FAQ

Answering all your Kava questions
  • No, not with traditional grind kava. The kava fibres irritate the stomach, so it is important they don’t leak out of the straining bag.

  • 50 grams (about ¾ of one cup) for every litre of water makes a nice
    balanced kava.

  • Yes, just remember less kava = a weaker drink. More water also = a weaker drink. You can cut our recipe in half if you want to make less but we recommend making a litre at a time because you can save what you don’t drink and enjoy your beautiful kava the next day.

  • Pour into a bottle, cap it and put in the fridge. It will several more days
    this way.

  • Our bags will last for years. Rinse them out with hot water and wring them out to dry after each use. After 5 mixes, throw the kava bag in the wash with your whites and air dry.

  • The kavalactones are what give kava its desired effects and they bind tightly to the kava fibre. The only way to separate them is through physical agitation.

  • The best way is on an empty stomach, before dinner. “Pour a “shell” of 150 – 200 ml and scull it in one go. We don’t drink kava
for the taste. Have a chaser of New Leaf Kombucha or Santi Yerba Mate nearby for maximum joy.

Wait 10 to 15 minutes before your next shell and do it again.

  • Everyone has different levels of sensitivity to kava. Some might reach their happy place after one shell because our kava is high in kavalactones and is very strong. Others might need more shells. Play around with it and find out what suits you.

  • Good noble kava, like ours, will never give you a hangover. It metabolises quickly and after a few hours is out of your system. Most people would have to drink an aquarium full to feel it the next day.

  • Yes, but they are less effective and not recommended. You can put the kava and water in a blender and blend it for three minutes. Not much longer or the kava will overheat and taste nasty. You still have to pour it through the strainer bag, though.

An AluBall contraption also works for small doses on the go. However, it
won’t be as potent or as satisfying as traditional kneading.
